چکیده

A reservoir rock is a porous geological formation in contact with two liquids : brine and oil. An improved knowledge of rock wettability is of primary importance to estimate the amount of crude oil in underground resources. The petroleum industries have observed that wettability contrasts in sedimentary reservoir rocks are largely correlated to the presence of clays (illite andlor kaolinite) in the rock's intergranular space. More precisely, the grain surfaces of illite show a preference to brine. Kaolinite preferentially adsorbs oil, which imparts its hydrophobic characteristics to the mineral surface. Using X-ray absorption and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopies, we studied at the atomic level the adsorption process of asphaltenes in the presence of water. We show experimentally that the wettability contrasts obberved in kaolinite and illite are related to structural differences between these two clays and we show the primordial role of the grain surface hydroxyls. At last, the role of the water in the asphaltenes adsorption process has been investigated, using the same spectroscopies.

The Relationship between the Con- Stitution of Brickmaking Clays

ABSTR&CT Seven brickmaking clays from various geological horizons have been studied by differential thermal and X-ray methods. The minerals detected included kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite, chlorite, swelling chlorite, calcite and quartz, and rough estimates were made of the quantities present. For the same clays, deformation-under-load was measured at four different heating rates, and stre...

Modes of tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrinatomanganese(III) ion intercalation inside natural clays

BACKGROUND Metalloporphyrin ions, with planar shape, have been known to intercalate horizontally and diagonally between montmorillonite layers. Perpendicular intercalation inside montmorillonite has not been reported earlier. This work aims at achieving perpendicular intercalation inside montmorillonite in natural clays. Possible intercalation inside other forms of natural clay will also be inv...

شناسایی و نحوه تشکیل کانی‌های رسی در خاک‌های منطقه فرخ‌شهر، استان چهار محال و بختیاری

Clay minerals have considerable effects on physico-chemical properties of soils. Using different techniques, mineralogy of silicate clays and their formation were investigated in selected soils from Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. The study area is about 1300 ha and its soil moisture and temperature regimes are xeric and mesic, respectively. Geomorphologically, the area consists of differen...

Thermal Analysis: A Complementary Method to Study the Shurijeh Clay Minerals

Clay minerals are considered the most important components of clastic reservoir rock evaluation studies. The Shurijeh gas reservoir Formation, represented by shaly sandstones of the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age, is the main reservoir rock in the Eastern Kopet-Dagh sedimentary Basin, NE Iran. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopic (S...
